2 days – Trang to Koh Phi Phi

Trang to most of the way to Khlong Thom – 104km

Bonus ! Found a Roti shop 200m from my hotel, but that was the highlight of a pretty boring day. The local road out of Trang serviced the surrounding industrial area, so there was plenty of traffic for a good 20kms. I passed a nice waterfall, with a large tourist parking and recreation area, but there was nobody around.

A surprising volume of water considering it’s one of the highest points around here

In the end, I was pleased to get to Khlong Thom and the Vanilla Ville hotel after another 100km day. (I promised myself I wouldn’t do that). I could see a storm coming and was hoping to make it to the hotel first. Made a wrong turn – aaaagh, got caught in traffic – double aaaggghhh, then had to navigate a small market area. And.. it rained heavily about 30 seconds after I arrived at the hotel.

The hotel is run by an unassuming Thai guy who’d spent 2 years in Canberra. I refueled from the local Lotus supermarket and dinner was from the hawker area – filling but a long way from Penang standard.

Khlong Thom to Ko Phi Phi

This morning, I thought I’d go for a 7-11 breakfast. They have an array of food that they warm up in their microwaves for you, and they serve half decent coffee too. (Please note my previous comments that my coffee taste buds have changed a little. Enjoying a Starbucks coffee proves the case.

Today was highway 4 all the way to Krabi. The only exciting part was dodging a storm half way along. It was also a strange day as I know that Phillip Montgomery was killed in a car accident in this area – it’s still something that I can’t imagine.

I arrived at Krabi Ferry Pier after a GPS induced tour of the backstreets of Krabi. It’s a little disorganised here.

I went back to town and had a great lunch, and returned so I could buy a ticket, then waited for the ferry and booked some accommodation. It’s so easy to do this these days. In my backpacking days, we spent lots more time wandering around and finding accom. Touts actually helped !

The ferry to Koh Phi Phi was quite rough. One lady was heaving after 30 mins and there were quite a few very pale worried looking people on board.

I didn’t realise this island was such a party island (I should research more), however it seems fairly quiet and I’m staying away from the noise, in a bungalow.
