Neustadt to Ahrensburg

Well, it was raining this morning, so I didn’t hurry. I’m out of food for breakfast and in all of the wind of the past two days, I didn’t replenish. Luckily, the on-site restaurant did the job. It also provides good cover during a heavy storm and I could recharge some electronics at the same time.

In other words, I had my usual late start. Then I had an earlier than usual second breakfast in Neustadt only a few KMs down the road.

Neustadt. I was surprised how nice the river area was

The ride today was a slow, stop start affair. I’d decided to ride south towards Lübeck and give the winds another few hours to die down further, then turn south west towards Hamburg. That meant that I was hovering around in suburbs and outskirts for much of the time. The bike paths were fine, but going through residential areas and towns slows you down.

It has its advantages though, namely, Aldi Apple turnovers. There’s an Aldi on the outskirts of every sizable village or town.

In the first part of the day, I went through a beach holiday area. Unfortunately for the many holidaymakers, it was cold and overcast. They had hundreds of small shelters numbered and set up in rows on the beach. It’s not my style, but judging by how many there were, it must’ve been popular.

Today however, everyone was out riding bikes and getting in my way 😁

About 30kms out of Lübeck, I met a young french cyclist, Marena who asked about accommodation options where I’d been. She was going to Lübeck that night having already done 100kms today. That is awesome riding for someone who isn’t some hardcore bike packer type.

My destination was a rustic, lakeside campground near Ahrensburg. When I was 20kms away I called and checked that I could camp there and it wasn’t open today for some reason. Not happy Jan.

I luckily found a room a similar distance away in a slightly strange hostel / hotel place.

Lots of this today

On the way there, I thought my directions were wrong, as the gps took me through a farm and along some hiking trails. The description of the hotel said that is was near an U-bahn station and I really started to doubt where I was heading. But sure enough, as I came around a bend, there was the trainline and the hotel wasn’t far away. Dinner was from local Aldi and it was an early night.
