It was quite cold this morning, but cloudless and I was up early and looking around. We were right near the river and there were some commercial boats going past. None of them could turn around in this part of the river. They’re too long and the river too narrow. I don’t know how they manage it. There are enormously long cruise boats using the river as well.
The ride today was mostly relaxed and by the river. We had a few kms on a road but most was on bike paths. It was also very warm at 31 degrees – just great.
We went through a number of towns and villages that were really nice, as you’d expect in this area. We had lunch under trees by the river as the ferry did it’s ferry thing back and forth, and loads of cyclists whizzed past. Some were even on normal bikes not e-bikes and a few smiled.
We picked a few apples and had them on the way into Werzfeld. You feel a little bit Huckleberry Finn doing this. We stopped by the river before the town, drank tea and had a swim before going on. More Huckleberry Finn ! Miles and I walked around the town. It’s beautiful.
This area, while really nice doesn’t seem to be crawling with tourists like it did on the Rhine. We were all pleased to get away from there and really appreciate the change.
We left Werzfeld, found a supermarket and then rode the six or seven kms to the only campsite in the area. It’s a great spot, again beside the river, but with plenty of trees. It even has a bar / restaurant where we had a post ride beer before the now famous, stove showdown while heating up pasta for dinner.
Miles and Clare have a Firemaple stove which is super quick to set up and get going. It was boiling water while I was still priming my Omnilite multifuel stove. However, I know which one I prefer for remote touring.
