Strangely named hotels – Nghia Lo to the Blue Home

Today’s ride on Komoot

Today was to be tougher than yesterday, so I ate two breakfasts in preparation and it was a great idea.

We found a Banh Mi stall on the way out of town and because of my already excessive eating, it would take me most of the day to finish it.

Banh Mi time

While at the stall, Miles found a great looking hotel just off our route. It looked great so I booked a couple of rooms.

As we’re in the hills of northern Vietnam, we were expecting a strenuous day and got one.

Nescafe time

At our first stop halfway up a hill, we grabbed a Nescafe from the roadside restaurant. The lady generously gave us a boiled potato each – on the house. I know it may seem ungrateful, but mine is now composting, making a contribution to a forest in northern Vietnam.

We continued to climb through nice countryside. Miles had to eat and stopped at a restaurant but I was a fair way ahead and wasn’t aware. I continued on to the original place that I’d earmarked. It wasn’t the greatest town, but there were food options, a few nice coffee shops and the hotel looked good from the outside. I pulled up at the cafe next door.

While there, I started chatting to some motorbikers from Aus. I forget their names unfortunately but I really appreciated the conversation and their support. I was leaving as Miles arrived so we farewelled the bikers and headed off.

The hotel was just off our route for sure, but it was down an extremely steep road that had to be walked. We then went through a small village and up a hill to the hotel. It wasn’t great but it was in a spectacular spot with an incredible view from the rooms. The issue was food – sorry, restaurant closed.

There was no way we were going anywhere else and in the end they agreed to provide dinner and breakfast which was more than expected. I also arranged to have our bags taken to the main road in the morning. That hill was just too steep.

At the Blue Home

But why is it called the Blue Home ? It’s not blue and the accommodation is in cabins not a home. Anyway …

I slept well, perched above the valley.

  1. Hold on John! Throwing a spud into the forest. What are you thinking? Next think you’ll be chucking banana skins and apple cores. I’m telling Franklin about this flagrant environmental abuse!
