Abbeyfeale to Castleisland

Today’s ride on Komoot

Timing was everything today. I had a short ride, but knew that rain was arriving just after lunch time but then I couldn’t check in until 6pm at the Airbnb. In the end, my timing was perfect all ’round.

Leens Hotel in Abbeyfeale

I had the luxury of a sleep in at the nice pub in Abbeyfeale, then a nice slow breakfast there and some time spent looking for a mystery vibration on the bike. (I think I know where it is but fixing it will still be interesting.

The first couple of kms were on the busy main road south of Abbeyfeale. The trucks were very good though and I was soon on a very quiet road.

Knocknagashel village – where my grandmother’s sister was born
These two dogs sat in this field by themselves, no humans anywhere near – and barked non stop. No chasing, just sitting and barking

It was a funny day.  The first turnoff of note was to the village where my grandmother’s sister was born and my destination was where my grandmother was born. I can’t help but think of the circumstances of their journey to Australia for both of my grandparents (on mums side) and their families. The trip can’t have been easy and the reasons for the trip definitely would have been been painful. Glad they did it though !

It was lovely rolling hills with views in this part of Kerry. I rode past a farm and one dog started barking and another ran out onto the road barking and chasing me. I hoped they were similar to Thai dogs, so I got off the bike, walked towards it and scolded it. It put its head down sheepishly and trotted home. I doubt that will work everywhere but it was good today.

For the first time on this trip, today felt a bit lonely. It’s possibly the weather which means there’s not many people out and about and less tourists, but it was very quiet indeed.

There’s Castleisland, but first, an out of control downhill – yeeehaaa
