I left the hotel and packed the bike, but then realised I hadn’t put on any sunscreen. When the lady from the hotel saw me putting it on, she wanted some, smeared it all over her face then tried to pay me for it.
I left, knowing that there were some coffee shops just down the road and expected some food options. However the road was muddy, strewn with rubbish and dusty. No place looked particularly inviting, so I went up the hill to a junction and found a great Banh Mi stall with a nice coffee shop over the road. Everything is still dusty and dirty, but the top of the hill is just that bit nicer. A perfect start after having no idea about sustenance today.
The lady in the coffee shop didn’t want to serve me a second coffee. She couldn’t believe I wanted two. I’m also finding that hardly any place serves the classic drip coffee around here. Many have espresso machines, pour a shot and then add condensed milk. It’s very nice but doesn’t have the same atmosphere 😁
Once again, some slow morning progress. I’m one kilometre down the road and it’s nearly 9am. However, 28 degrees with a light breeze is now perfect riding conditions for me, so it doesn’t really matter what time I start. I think I’ve acclimatised after the last four months. We’ll see what happens as I head further south and it warms up.
I really wanted to see the Son My (My Lai) Massacre museum but a large part of me didn’t. To me, it’s no different to any of the atrocities perpetrated by humans on humans. They are all totally unfathomable, and any excuse of simply following orders simply doesn’t wash. It’s basic, barbarian and inexcusable.
The area around the museum felt strange. Sometimes you get a good or bad feeling about a place, but this simply felt empty, as if everyone and everything had left. I think part of the museum was closed. I saw details about the Americans and watched a short movie but was spared some of the images that many others have commented on.
From there, it was a short ride into Quang Ngai which is surprisingly large and modern. I’m staying at the Phu My hotel (Puma pants, Richie !) which is nice and clean and only 230,000VND. There seems to be a few food and coffee options around here as well as a mall and mini-mart, so thanks again for your recommendation, Andrew.
Awww, dearie gracious me, The Phu My Hotel! That’s one of the most unheard of things I’ve ever heard of JB!!!
Glad you’re enjoying yourself over there, stay safe and looking forward to catching up around the 13th Dec.
Thanks Uncle Doug !
Yes, it’s still going well. I’m starting to look forward to heading home in a month’s time and seeing some familiar faces.
How’d the hockey go ?
