It was cold this morning and with a shortish ride, I needed no other excuses to sleep in. So it was my usual slow start.

In town, I’d found a combo coffee shop and Banh Mi place what was absolutely fantastic. I think I was their best customer in the previous 48 hours, so I had another great coffee, hit the bakery and took off along the Maffra road.

I went up a long-ish hill I’d done previously (6 years ago) as I left town, and once over it, I was in another world – the Monaro High Plains. It was stark and mainly devoid of trees but the day was stunning and I felt at home again.

The paved road was almost empty of traffic and after twenty something kilometres, I turned off onto some nice dirt roads that wound through some small hills. It was magical, so I stopped for lunch, got out my chair and relaxed. There was no hurry to get to Dalgety. There’s not much there anyway.

And the second half of the ride was similar – relaxed and quiet.

I thought I’d grab a meal at the Dalgety pub tonight, but they don’t open until Wednesday. Luckily, I had plenty of food and there was also a great camp kitchen with some interesting people to talk to.
It got cold quickly, so I had an early night.
