I had the ‘breakfast with the view’ at the hotel. The view was from the 10th floor and very nice. The breakfast was perfect – a change from muesli, yoghurt and banana. The good thing about Denmark, is that you can order a coffee with milk just about anywhere and it’s good strong coffee. So, I was fed and caffeinated quite early and away on time.
This was my first real experience with the legendary Danish cycle lanes and it was brilliant. The lanes were wide and usually one way which means there must be thousands of people using them. Today was Saturday so it was quiet. The drivers were amazingly attentive and courteous. If we could get just a little bit more of that back home …
After ten kms, I was out of the city and into the country, sort of. I was still in bike lanes which extended nearly all the way today, and I was close to the coast but didn’t see much of it. There was also an increasing number of cyclists coming the other way as I as on the Eurovelo 9 for part of the day.
There were also things to see. I stopped at Stevns lighthouse at Højerup and then at a military museum not far down the road. It was fascinating. I was unaware of what the cold war had meant to countries like Denmark and I’d never thought about it.
On display here, at the museum were invasion plans from Poland and the Warsaw Pact countries. That makes sense, as it’s not too far across the Baltic. These days, ferries ply the routes that would have been taken by warships. This installation was set up to defend Copenhagen and only decommissioned in the very late 80s.
Next was Rødvig which looks like a nice place by the sea. It had a supermarket too, so I had a late lunch of blue cheese and Rogebrot. I could have eaten much more of it too. I loved it.
There was a campground not far away, but I opted for one about 15kms further south. There was a nearby supermarket and the beach was apparently very nice.
When I got there, there was a community beach party in progress that went to about 2am, and the supermarket was closed by the time I went to it. Still, I met some nice people at the campsite and went to the local Italian restaurant for dinner. After 95kms today, I thought I should eat some more.
I met some people from near Dresden and I basically had a German lesson and they got an English lesson. They were a great couple who had been married forty years and were riding from Berlin to Copenhagen.
I don’t know how, but I went to sleep through the blaring music. There’s rain coming, but the forecast changes continually, so I think I’ll just take it easy and let the rain happen if it does.
