Dog day to Prachuap Khiri Khan – 78kms

I decided to photograph each temple that I went past today, and did so for three in the first 10kms.
Wat #1
After that, the road seemed to be full of dogs. If I saw one, I saw 50-60. I felt like there was a dog around every corner and quickly forgot about the temples.

Most of the dogs were just intent on sleeping but three were interested in making meal out of me.

My technique is to slow right down, so there’s nothing to chase, and look away so there’s no pressure on them. Sometimes, I’ll even stop. It seems to work mostly. When it doesn’t, I’m in trouble 😁
only joking 😁, they were never this bad

One dog walked out into the middle of the road, looked me up and down, then immediately rolled over and went back to sleep.

I’d read that you had to spend 20kms or so on the highway for this stretch, but my mapping app thought otherwise. I don’t know why I trusted it, maybe I just felt adventurous.

This bit was fun
After a bit of bush bashing, the lane became impassable jungle and I had to backtrack – lost 10kms in all. The worst part was that I had to go back past 3 growling prowling mutts that harassed me the first time through. I grabbed a stick, rode warily around the corner, the tension built, I was expecting a rematch, and … they weren’t there.

Felt a little stupid with the stick, so it was tossed pretty quickly 😁.

For some time, the route took me near the railway line and I crossed it a number of times throughout the day.

This sums up Thailand traffic and easy going attitude

There was a nervous guy on the train, waving to attract attention as it was shunting. No harm done and all very safe – as long as no idiots are involved.

The rest of the ride was a little boring, but PKK impressed as a nice town. I stayed at a really nice hotel Zee Zide – again on another cyclist’s recommendation. There’s a beautiful harbour and night markets for food.

It was there that I met Stuart (@worldmotoadventure) from the Gold Coast. Great guy doing something similar on a motorbike. Unfortunately, Covid and border closures interrupted his plans. Really enjoyed talking to a like minded traveller.

I finished the evening with a beer on the hotel balcony in the cool night breeze overlooking the harbour – writing up this blog entry.
