It was wet last night, but it hadn’t rained for hours, and things started to dry out as the sun came up. All that took a while. I said goodbye to the nice elderly owners of the campground and went into town in search of a coffee and an early second breakfast. I had success with the coffee but not the food. I figured I’d pick something up on the way out of town.
I stopped at a Bierdronka supermarket and loaded up the food for the day. It took a while to leave the suburban clutches of Elblag which was surprisingly large but with a lovely old town centre.
The route seemed to keep climbing and climbing and I stopped to see what was in store for the rest of the day. I followed a Eurovelo a while, and the Polish Green Velo route intermittently for the rest of the day. The latter is not exactly direct. It winds and zigzags its way through the countryside as if, deep down, it just doesn’t want to go anywhere.
I stopped at Tolkmicko on the coast for a coffee then rode up to Fromberk where I made my lunch in the nice town square. This is the birthplace of Copernicus and it has a super impressive church overlooking town.
That’s the thing about Polish churches and important buildings, their scale is huge. They’re not necessarily ornate but they would have kept bricklayers in business for a long time.
I cruised into Pieniężno, spotted the supermarkets and went to the campground just out of town. Nice people and facilities in a nice setting. Besides, there was a restaurant and a petrol station nearby where I got some petrol for my stove as I’m expecting to be cooking more over the next couple of weeks.
After cleaning up and setting up, I went to the restaurant – closed for a function – and the only other option was a kebab. Oh well, it has to be done.
