From Mud Huts to former lavish Hotels – Wapi Pathum to Yasothon

Today’s ride on Komoot

We left the strange hotel along a dusty road through the fields. The owners daughter was concerned that we were going the wrong way and called to us as we rounded the corner. Very kind of her, but in Komoot we trust !

This little girl stopped the traffic

There were some interested dogs over the next few kms but it was very pleasant riding through farmland and small villages. We see lots of locals going about their business.

It’s funny seeing people’s reactions to two foreigners riding bikes past them. Usually, they’ll see you, then a couple of seconds later it’ll register, then they’ll look confused, and only then will they smile and say hello.

Found some great coffee here

We stopped in Chaturapak Phiman for a fantastic coffee and Miles printed his Laos e-visa. That’s right, you need to print an e-visa.

Once again, it was easy riding. I know I’ve said that nearly every day, but it was. And as usual, we had lunch in a friendly place in a small village. One of the teachers from the school over the road became a good translater, and I had my favourite dish – Pad Kpao Moo Kai Do. It was a good one too. Off again.

Eucalypts, red dirt, …

Our next stop was to resolve a dispute with Booking.com where the owner charged us double what was advertised. It took a while but a refund was agreed. That left us with nowhere to stay, so we did the 25kms to the next town – it was a relaxed easy ride. The ice cream half way was a great idea and again, friendly locals laughed and helped us out with chairs and ice for our water bottles. We must have looked tired (I was).

These ladies laughed and got chairs for us

The hotel was strange. Definitely seen better days. It was absolutely cavernous and felt completely out of place.

We walked into town for some dinner. There wasn’t much in the old town, but the food was nice – pork belly rice and veggies.

This last day, I’ve felt tired – not in the legs, but sleepy tired, and I attribute that to not eating enough food. Today I made sure to eat plenty, so I picked up a banana smoothie on the way home.

That was the end of a fairly unexciting day.
