It looked like a nice day as we munched on the great breakfast at Pension Seeblick. Did I say it was great ? The best yet.
So, off we went, not early, but still not too shabby. Unfortunately after the early uphill there was a long downhill. That’s never good at the start of a day where there’s plenty of elevation gain. It just means more pain for me. Dennis on the other hand was revelling in it.
We rejoined the Bodensee/ Konigsee route (the BK for those in the know). It was great but the signage wasn’t always clear. When you’re hurtling downhill having fun, no signage is clear. That’s how we had the first wrong turn of the day. Langley, at this stage had removed himself from any navigational responsibilities after the Switzerland disaster. Rightly so. (So it was all my fault 😁).
Earlier, we’d found a coffee shop / deli that was able to give us all of the food we needed for the day. It was run by a lovely lady who was accommodating like a smart business owner should be. Yesterday, when we asked for two apples at a shop near Lindau, we were immediately and rudely dismissed by the shopkeeper who didn’t want to break open a kilo bag. This lady said – of course , broke open the bag and gave us out apples. Today would be a gourmet day.
The riding was mainly on segregated bike paths and it amazed me that they had been built. However there were now so many cyclists using the paths that surely it was all justified. Looking at the communities around here, it’s clear that cyclo-tourism is a major focus. The numbers of people doing what we’re doing so early in the season is surprising.
… and in Australia, we have communities baulking at the introduction of every new rail trail !
Along the way, we passed a village where there were some local festivities happening. Apparently it was where they play an old German version of ten pin bowling. We met a lady, Bridgette who explained everything about the place and the area – even the name of the little yellow flowers in every field – löwenzähne, or lion’s teeth.
There was plenty of climbing and the scenery was sensational. It was a picture postcard day until the weather closed in as the day ended. Earlier, we’d thought that camping was a good idea, but in the overcast, chilly afternoon, that idea was quickly discarded.
Instead, we rode into central Immenstadt and found a hotel with a restaurant – so we booked in our meal, cleaned up, had an end of day beer and returned for our now regular stodgy German meal. Perfect cycling food.
