What are the locals called here in Morón de la Fronterra ?
When I woke this morning, I really didn’t feel great. I felt like the head cold I’d been fighting off, had finally won. I pondered for half an hour over whether to take a rest day here and sleep but then realised that last night, I’d booked a place for tonight and I may as well get going.
I stopped at a nice cafe for breakfast then dropped by the Lidl supermarket for the day’s food. I got what I needed and joined the long checkout queue. After 10 minutes of hardly moving, I gave up, replaced my items and left. It was really late by now and I decided to stock up at the next town in 20kms time.
There’s lots of mileage in the name of this place I know, but as I left, I went past the local jail – detention for morons ? I’ll stop now.
Ok. Last one, I swear.
Usually when I’m running late, I get phone calls from family and friends, talk too much then find I’m really really late. That’s what happened today, but I wouldn’t change it.
Today’s route was in olive growing territory. In fact that’s about the only vegetation I saw. There were olives as far as the eye could see in all directions. The route also had 50kms on a bumpy gravel service road close to the freeway. I was avoiding big mountains as much as possible, so the alternative would have meant many hundreds of extra vertical metres today. As it was, I did 760 verts today, which is a decent effort with a loaded bike.
I didn’t stop for long anywhere today, and I ate on the go or beside the trail. When I finally left the dirt road and freeway, I was on a fairly busy road with trucks in both directions. They were all very kind to me thankfully, and the traffic thinned out after the next few villages. As I made the final turn towards Navahermosa, the sun came out and shone across the plains onto the rocky mountains in the distance. There’s something wonderful about the last rays of the sun, and this was spectacular.
Riding at this time of the evening, before it gets cold, is fantastic. I had a smile on my face until arrived.
I read that other cyclists had stayed at this hotel but tonight it was really quiet. It had a restaurant attached and that too, was empty. I’m so glad it was there, otherwise I would have struggled to find food around here
