I retired in mid-2021 with a view to seeing the world from my bike (This Moment) and enjoying the lifestyle that it entails. So far, so good …
My Rules
Some cyclists insist on riding every inch of the way and refuse bus or taxi rides or similar. I really don’t care too much about that. However, I’ve set my own rules out below. Time will tell if I can follow them all.
- The purpose of the trip is to see as much as I can and experience as much as I can
- I’ll ride where I can but take trains, buses or taxis if I need to
- I’ll minimise the amount of gear that I have with me and concentrate on quality
- I’ll look for interesting tourism options
- I’ll stay as long or short as I like wherever I like (visas permitting)
- I’ll live cheaply, but each week will include splurge stuff
- I’ll take no crap from idiots but I’ll talk with everyone. I’m not here to change anyone’s life.
- I’ll try and stick to a meditation routine
NZ – Jan-Feb, 2023
I spent a month on the South Island of NZ riding through some stunning landscapes and meeting some of the most friendly people around.
I cut the trip short after the cyclone and flooding on the nort island, and flew home from Wellington.
South-East Asia – Jul-Dec, 2022
I spent nearly six months riding from Singapore through Malaysia and Thailand, then into Laos and across to Vietnam and then on to Bangkok.
It was a wonderful experience of many cultures, significant historical sites, challenging landscapes, amazing food and friendly people.
Australia Mar-June, 2022
I rode from Caloundra down the coast to Sydney, took a bus to Albury, then rode along the Murray and through the Mallee into SA and up to Adelaide.
There I met a group of friends and together, we followed the Mawson trail up to Wilpena Pound. Awesome Mawson !
Back to Adelaide, then I meandered to Melbourne visiting friends and catching up with my kids for a great 4-day weekend in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.
Australia – Nov-Dec, 2021
The day that Sydney came out of lockdown, I took my new Koga World Traveller, started at Lithgow station and headed to Dubbo.
I met friends and we rode the Central West Cycle Trail over four days. I then headed off through NSW and down to Canberra, met more friends in Bungendore and we rode in northern Victoria for four days until their 4WD broke down.
After that, I rode through Tumbarumba and Tumut on my way to Kiama where I rested for a few days before some housesitting in Sydney over Christmas.
