Narbonne to Beziers

Today’s ride on Komoot

Today, I was heading to the Canal di Midi and the town of Beziers. Again, it was a beautiful day – crisp early but warming up quickly.

Leaving Narbonne

I had breakfast at the Boulangerie around the corner. They have a special for the hotel guests. I have to say that there’s something about french bread and pastries that other countries simply don’t have. As usual, crossing the border to France makes the difference.

I was out of Narbonne surprisingly quickly and into grape country by the canal. I didn’t know, but today would be canal riding all day. Normally, I’d think that is the most boring thing to do, but I’m feeling a bit fatigued (really John ? After only 26,000 kms ?), so an easy day’s riding was just the ticket.

The start was anything but easy with the wind in my face or thereabouts. I knew that once I got to the Canal du Midi I’d turn right and mainly have a tailwind for the rest of the day.

It was a Eurovelo day

Second breakfast was in  Sallèles-d’Aude at the boulangerie – lovely people. All of the locals looked at my bike parked outside the narrow street and said hi as they walked into the Boulangerie.

One thing I noticed everywhere today were traffic jams. There has to be something going on.

Grapes, Olives and old buildings – got the trifecta

The ride was fairly uneventful apart from the bike path changing from perfect to barely rideable and back on a regular basis. To be fair, there’s work happening on it too. Also, I didn’t go through any towns or villages after Sallèles-d’Aude, and that probably contributed to the ‘uneventful’ comment due to the quiet day overall.

It was good day nonetheless, and Beziers is an interesting place. It’s on a hill which meant a bit of effort right at the end of the day unfortunately, but that’s what makes the place interesting. The views out to the surrounding plains are stunning. (I could still see traffic jams).
