Natai Beach to Khao Lak – 50kms

The lady running Natai House asked what time I wanted breakfast and I hadn’t realised that it was included. Ok, what time do you start ? 7am. Ok, 7am please. Maybe 8am sir. So we agreed 7:30.

Breakfast duly arrived at 8am. Some negotiations, you simply can’t win.

I had a late start as a result, then 200m up the road, I dropped my phone while riding. I pulled up at the beach and took some photos and asked for some directions. Turns out the lady I asked, lived in Canberra for years until her husband passed away, so she moved back here. It was nice to talk to her.

I dropped the phone taking this photo. I should stop the bike before snapping

I checked my phone to make sure of the directions and noticed that it was continually rebooting. Great, just what the doctor ordered. So, no maps. I tried my tablet, but it needed wifi, and didn’t have the local Maps.me map anyway. Luckily, I have a compass and an unerring sense of direction 😁

I tried a few times to fix the phone over the next hour, until I remembered which buttons to press and fixed it. It’s nice to know where you are going, but the experience tells me that I should have the general route memorised each day.

All of this contributed to me being not far down the road by 10:30am, and not having yet had a coffee. The day warmed up substantially, but the ever present breeze kept things workable, and it was a pleasant ride through some villages before emerging onto a more busy road north. As always, there was a generous shoulder for me and my motorbiking mates to safely avoid trucks and cars. There was a nice hill through the national park south of Khao Lak town and the downhill was superb.

Again, I chose a destination and hotel based on another cyclist’s blog – great choices.

Downtown Khao Lak

In the afternoon, I had a swim at the beach and a good walk around the place – which is touristy without being over the top.

Dinner was at a small Thai restaurant then I couldn’t resist the banana pancake stall. If you don’t watch them make it, it tastes much healthier.

I realised that tomorrow was the annual marathon in Khao Lak. That explained all of the hungry emaciated people in sports gear walking around town 😁
