As I’ve mentioned, breakfast was fantastic and we said goodbye to all of the families and headed straight back to last night’s restaurant – where we were unable to pay the bill last night.
They took cash only and we haven’t struck this before, so we promised to come back this morning and pay with some Euros – even though we were still in Switzerland. Very, very nice of them.
From there, it was straight down to Lake Constance which was only a kilometre away.
It was beautiful, and we followed some lazy bike paths into the nice town for our morning coffee. We left and luckily walked on to a ferry to Meersburg with a couple of minutes to spare. On the ferry, we met Andreas, a cyclist who gave us some tips on what to expect and where to go.
When we got off the ferry, the place was full of tourists. We didn’t realise that it’s the May Day holiday weekend. I’ve never seen so many cyclists on bike paths.
Admittedly, most bikes were eBikes, but it was great to see so many people out and about. Unfortunately, after a few kms, the path left the lake and we spent most of the day following bike paths through countryside and suburbs.
It was still very nice though.
We stopped with about 5kms to go at a bar – we were looking for anything but a bar. Unfortunately, Macca’s was the only alternative. We asked for some apple cider, preferably non alcoholic. What we got was non alcoholic beer, and it wasn’t good at all. The place was a bar with a billiard hall so it really wasn’t the greatest place to be.
We then navigated the final few kms to the pension which was unfortunately up the hill. We were both pretty knackered on arrival, but the guesthouse is a really nice one.
The lady in the guesthouse recommended a restaurant that was (you guessed it) down the hill which meant a slog back to the guesthouse afterwards. The meal was absolutely sensational.
I have a rule that if Gnocchi is on the menu, then I must order it, and I’m so glad I did. It was Gnocchi filled with wild garlic. The restaurant was unassuming, but excellent with the staff excelling – and not expensive. It was a quiet Saturday night in Hörbranz.
