Rakaia Gorge to Christchurch

I got going early today because the first opportunity for second breakfast was in 30kms at the metropolis of Horrorata. Rakaia was Gorge-ous (oh hah ha hardy ha) in the early morning light.

Right off the bat, I struck the only hill of the day. It was frustrating because the great views were mainly behind me as I as ended. It was stunning and for once, I was sad for the uphill to end – because it heralded the flat Canterbury Plains zzzzzzzzz. Without coffee, I was in danger of dozing off.

When I made it to Horrorata, the cafe was like an oasis. The omelette, the coffee, it was … just the vibe.

From there, it was head down and bum up for the rest of the day which seemed to drag on and on. The absence of photos says that there wasn’t much to look at, but that’s unfair because I’m comparing it to the amazing places I’ve been.

When I got some phone reception, I tried to book a bed in Christchurch. No easy task. The place was full due to the Coast to Coast race on the weekend. Luckily there was a bulk cancellation and some rooms came available, although not cheaply.

No further comments about the rest of the ride. I arrived at the hotel at exactly the same time as another bike tourer – Anthony from Sydney. We shared stories over some craft brews and I got some great tips àbout where to go next. Thanks Anthony.

The next day was spent repairing my sleep mat, looking for others, getting a new pillow etc. I spent most of my day in camping stores.

On Saturday morning, I put the bike on the local bus to Lyttleton. I did that because I had absolutely no interest in riding over the Port Hills. There’s a tunnel, but cyclists aren’t allowed. I was the most nervous passenger, as my precious bike bounced along on the rack in front of the bus. My fears were well founded as it fell off just 50 metres from my bus stop. Amazingly there was no damage.

I enjoyed some fantastic hospitality with Andrea and Paul plus their two amazing cats. Thanks guys, I had a great time.
