Taiping to Georgetown, Penang – 101kms

On the road by 7:30 with a minimal breakfast, but that’s not an issue, because here, you are always close to food. I stopped by a really good roti place again. This time after about 20kms. People still stared, but 3 came up to talk. All very nice and friendly as always. I had my usual for second breakfast – two Roti Telurs and a coffee.

Along the canal

Today’s ride had it all – some highway riding, country lanes, canals, a dirt track along the top of the local levy bank, then suburban back streets on approach to Butterworth.

Along the levee bank

I met Arne from Cairns when I got to the ferry terminal. He’s been on many bike tours over the years and he gave me a few tips on Thailand, as we chatted while waiting for the ferry. Nice guy.

I’m at the Carnarvon Guest House in Georgetown. It’s old, ornate very nice, seems friendly and is situated within walking distance of most things. It looks like a great place for the next few days.
