Another wow day – San Gimignano to Siena

Today’s ride on Komoot

We decided that today would be our last ride this week. We would have a rest day in Siena then get the train to Florence. It would allow Minou more time to ensure she got her flight and would mean we could be tourists for a day rather than retrace a fair portion of our route.

We descended out of San Gimignano – of course – and found ourselves on a fairly busy road. This would be a feature of the day. While there were quiet roads and paths that we thoroughly enjoyed, the busy roads weren’t fun at all. The cars were in a hurry and there was no shoulder, so we constantly relied on their goodwill for our safety.

Anyway, today included the usually awesome Tuscan views and rolling hills that I hope I’ll never get used to and take for granted.

The entry into Siena was wonderful too. The cobbled streets made for a fitting end to the journey that was a much about sampling Tuscany as it was about riding bikes around the place.

Having complained about San Gimignano and the tourists, Siena is yet another level. However, it’s large enough to allow us tourists to escape each other for brief moments. We had some nice food, had our usual afternoon aperitifs and wandered around this grand city.

I enjoyed simply sitting out in the main plaza area and people watching.

After our day off, we caught an early train to Florence to conclude a wonderful week. As I mentioned at the start, I’m privileged to be able to do this cycling thing with my adult kids in such a wonderful environment.
