Flat and sleepy – Shihezi to Kuytun

Today’s ride on Komoot

I got away at 8:30 but the whole town seems still half asleep. In fact the receptionist was still asleep on a stretcher behind the counter

It was nice and cool and I was hoping to get a few kilometers done before that changed.

I got some water at a small shop well past the outskirts of town.  I was starting to get a little bit worried because there were no convenience stores open along the way and I wasn’t expecting much for quite a while along the road.

Downtown Shihezi

I joined the G312 and was immediately in what I thought to be peak hour traffic on the small road. Although the traffic would later decrease, there were constantly loads of trucks and cars in a hurry get somewhere. It was an ugly day of cycling.

I wasn’t expecting a police escort either. As the road was only a lane each way, a slow moving police car would cause more chaos. Oh how I longed for a police escort to keep the trucks away from me !

Some suburban cooling towers. Quite imposing

Two police cars did go by and I’m sure they clocked me but they couldn’t do much as it was a busy narrow road.

After nearly 40 kms at around 11:00, I was starting to feel quite tired and fatigued, I assume due to yesterday’s 72kms and my 3 week layoff. So I decided to simply get to Kuytun and then have a good rest day on Wednesday .

There were two towns fairly close together and I looked for food but didn’t find anything that I felt like until I was almost leaving the second town. So I stopped and had a meal I didn’t really want to have and didn’t enjoy it – but food is just fuel, so it was what I needed.

Then on the way out of town, there was an area of about thirty restaurants with half a kilometre. Clearly, they wouldn’t have existed if I would have stopped earlier 

The rest of the ride  was much the same + busy with trucks, u til I was about 8kms from my destination. That’s where I turned onto a quiet untrafficked road. The last part was all downhill, and I made it to the nice hotel, feeling like I’d definitely done a full days work. 100kms is a full day for me !

Flat, flat, flat

Unfortunately, This Moment had to stay outside, but he/she/it is right under a camera and there is a security guard on duty.

I was still searching for some food I felt like and finally decided on a Chinese burger which was scrummy.

This came with the burger. I thought – pumpkin soup !!! Yum !!! But alas, it was pumpkin porridge. A poor imitation

With a rest day ahead, I took it easy and slept well.

On my rest day, I found a coffee shop that even looked like a coffee shop – very nice
